Joseph B. McCarthy, affectionately known as Joe, passed away unexpectedly on March 24, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Walworth, with his loving wife by his side. Born on July 25, 1949, in Rockford, Illinois, Joe lived a life defined by faith, family, and service.
A devoted member of St. Mary Parish in Woodstock for over 40 years, Joe’s unwavering commitment to his faith was reflected in his long-standing membership with the Knights of Columbus and his role as an usher at Sunday masses. Beyond his parish, Joe actively contributed to the Woodstock Little League and was a cherished member of the “Dream Crew.” For nearly 20 years, he tirelessly volunteered his time to help rebuild and maintain the Dream Field, leaving behind an enduring legacy for the community.
Joe shared a beautiful 53-year marriage with his beloved wife, Roberta, creating a legacy of love and devotion. Together, they raised eight wonderful children – Kim (Jamie) Norris, Tracy (Scott) Virzi, Bill (Julie) McCarthy, Megan Hooks, Kathryn Hartley, Kevin McCarthy, Erin (Bryan) Burmeister, and Mary (Micah) Beard. Joe was the proud grandfather of 14 grandchildren Paige, Tim, Andrew (Theresa), Josh, Adrienne, Quinn, Kyle, Connor, Emma, Owen, Olivia, Jackson, Benni and Ellie with #15 on the way and 3 great-grandchildren Oakley, Eamon and Nolan, whose laughter and milestones were among his greatest treasures.
Joe was one of eight siblings – Noreen (Jim), Colleen (Rick), Pat (Judy), Tom (Margie), Mary Jo, Kathy (Tom) and Jim (Carisa) – and his deep bond with his brothers and sisters enriched his life with love and shared memories. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Marian McCarthy.
He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his generous spirit, and the countless lives he touched with his warmth and wisdom. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Memorial gathering will be held at St. Mary Parish, 312 Lincoln Ave, Woodstock on Friday, April 4 from 9-10:30 am followed by a Memorial Mass to celebrate Joe’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
