Lady ÕCanes fall to Montini, McHenry ALISA GERRISH -
The Marian Central Catholic High School girls basketball team has been plagued with injuries almost the entire season. The team lost 64-10 to No. 1 ranked 3A team Montini Catholic High School Jan. 26 and 65-46 to McHenry High School Thursday at home.
"Our goal has been to hit 30-35 points," coach Lindsay Serpe said. "We hit over 40 points against McHenry," and that was without the two leading scorers who are both sidelined with injuries.
Co-captains Meagan Murphy and Tess Hadick are "extremely questionable," said assistant coach Dan Trueblood, when asked when they will compete again. Murphy, a junior and returning varsity member, has stress fractures in both legs. Hadick, a senior, sustained a possible sprain to the thumb on her shooting hand. She was able to practice Friday.
Also on the bench for the McHenry game were Tori Maher, out due to a sickness, and Emily Schnell, who had surgery on her thumb. Schnell, a junior, is out the rest of the season while Maher is expected back this week. It was a similar situation against Montini.
"Montini is a powerhouse team," Serpe said. "In the past, we've lost by a larger differential. Our goal for this game was clock management and game management." The last few times Marian took on the Broncos, they lost by 80 to 85 points. At the end of the first half, the Lady 'Canes were down 23-2. "Jenny Behler and Susan Thomas really helped control the pace of the game in the second half," allowing 41 points.
Serpe added, "Our goals going into the McHenry game were better execution of the offense, get more comfortable taking shots and have the defense transitioning better. I think we accomplished all those things."
Jennie Behler had 10 points against McHenry and is one of the girls who stepped up with the leaders off the floor. "Lately she has been deadly," Trueblood said. "She takes the ball to the basket hard." Britt Kotiw also had 10 points, and Lauren Grady scored 12 points.
Coach Serpe said going into the next few games the team will work on cutting down transitions and executing better offensively.
The team will play at Walther Lutheran High School Friday, Feb. 5.
