The Skyhawks defeated the Hurricanes 79-54. | Woodstock High School's varsity boys basketball team finished the regular season against highly rated Johnsburg Feb. 26 without three starters on the floor. The Skyhawks easily beat the Streaks, 66-44, on senior night in the Fox Valley Conference matchup at Johnsburg High School.
The score could have been more lopsided if the Skyhawks (24-2, 10-2 FVC) played its starters in the first quarter and fourth quarter. The Skyhawks have won their last four games heading into the playoffs, while the Blue Streaks continue to struggle without the services of top players Mike Sutter, Jake Vernola and Jyron Aparri, who are all out with injuries.
The Skyhawks, the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A Johnsburg Regional, were led by C.J. Fiedorowicz's 20 points and Mike Dombrowski's 11 points.
The Blue Streaks (5-22, 1-11) stayed close the first quarter in large part because Johnsburg played senior non-starters to begin the game. However, the Skyhawks pulled away in the second quarter and led at halftime, 30-18. After the Skyhawks extended their lead in the third quarter, Skyhawks coach Luke Ravlin pulled his starters for most of the fourth quarter.
"I thought this was a real promising game for us," said Streaks coach Alex Baker. "We played them even-up the first quarter, but we went cold in the second quarter. We just weren't hitting our shots. That was the difference. I thought we moved the ball around well and weren't making mistakes. The Skyhawks got nine offensive rebounds in the second half. That is something we have to fix."
The Streaks do have some good news going into their Monday first-round playoff game against Woodstock North.
"We should be getting Jyron Aparri back, so that will help us," said Baker. "We expect a tough matchup against Woodstock North. They have some good players, and coach Joe Conroy will have them ready to play. But this last game showed me our players are still playing as hard as they have all season. That's all we can ask for. We think if they play hard Monday night, we have a good enough team to win."
Woodstock entered the playoffs as the No. 4 seed and faced fifth-seeded Woodstock North in the first round of the Class 3A Woodstock North Regional Monday. Results of the game came after press deadline.
